When extracting espresso, a finer grind is required, and the friction between the finer powders during the powdering process creates static electricity, which is what causes the powder to clump. Even when the powder is finally flattened and compacted, the water flow during extraction will still “avoid” the tight clumps and leave the powder in a looser place.

In 2005, John Weiss invented the WDT(Weiss Distribution Technique) when he was using a home grinder that was producing too many clumps of powder, using a fine needle or similar tool to agitate the powder in the bowl, breaking up the clumps of powder and distributing the density of the powder layer more evenly.

As the boutique coffee scene continues to grow, baristas continue to explore various techniques for extracting a good Espresso. By measuring and analyzing the pressure and flow rate inside the powder bowl, many techniques have been developed to make the extraction more stable, including the WDT Espresso Distribution Tool, which is especially used by competitors in competitions.

In operation, after simply accessing the handle with the powder catch ring to the ground coffee, the needle structure is used to break up the layer of ground coffee as a means of eliminating the problems of clumping and unevenness caused by static electricity and making the surface of the ground coffee without undulating excessively. Since the contact surface between the needle and the powder is positively small, this type of powder clother is virtually free of powder.
